I remember when I joined social media 15 years back it was just a connecting platform. Now, social media has grown tremendously and brought a lot, and I mean like really a whole of benefit to the society - connectivity, marketing, information updates, awareness, building communities and many more.
But just like two sides of a coin, social media also has its impact on society in a negative way. There's always the good and the bad, the yin and the yang. Now, what we see on social media platforms are almost perfect lives. People portray only the best versions of themselves - success, happiness, wealth, perfect marriages, flawless looks. Well, obviously no one is going to post up about their struggles and flaws. And for that reason, many today are found to be suffering due to their constant comparing and envy feeling. They compare others' glam and sparkles to their dull and average life.
We exist on earth but we live on stories and breathe on likes. Stressing over followers, views, likes, comments, etc. What was made to be a medium to connect with the world is now a platform where some feel the fear of being judged. Ohh have you heard of this one - 'FOMO' (Fear Of Missing Out) Yup, that's another fear. You don't want to miss a thing because you don't want to look dumb when something is discussed. Some are even afraid to sleep - "What did I miss when I was asleep?" So stressful huh!
Comparing ourselves to somebody we might or might not know is actually a very petty thing to do. And do you realize that everyone hates someone for no reason...but why? People who influence you or have the strongest opinions about you, do not even know you. We are so inundated with people, ideas and images around the clock. All these that you feed your mind with will continue to play in your head even after you close your eyes to sleep. Always be careful of what you feed your mind with each day.
Are you on any social media platform? I bet you are at least on one. It is totally fine to be here - just know that you have the power to reach out to the whole world at your fingertips. Reach out wisely. And remember to set boundaries. Cos the more people can access you, the more people might think they have the right to control you and judge you. People will have their mouth and opinions all directed into your life. The more public you become, the more access people think they will have.
Most of them never understand that even though some people share a lot on their respective platforms, it may just be 10% of everything else in their life. For the love of "you", set some healthy boundaries, know when to get offline and do a social media cleansing once in a while to protect your sanity. Remember, the grass is greenest wherever it is watered.
Nice one Cc! Much needed reminder for us ;)
